Scott Harvey has deep roots in the Sierra Foothills and it shows in his red label zinfandel. The color is not as dark as many zins from this area but the flavors are fruity yet lean. A very nice zin.

I’ll keep an eye out for this Zinfandel, it’s nice to here about a little style variation in the Sierra Foothills now and again. I’m always amazed at how inexpensive so many serious wines from this region are.

Yeah, many of the zins from the Sierra Foothills are dominated by rich and often jammy red fruits. There are exceptions, though, and Scott Harvey is one of them. His “red label” wines are the more affordable half of his lineup and the “white label” wines come from his best lots and are a bit more expensive ($25-$30). Scott Harvey has been making wine from Amador County fruit for a long time now and was the winemaker at Renwood years ago when his wines from there first put Amador zin on the map.

I live in Sacramento area and go up to Amador County to wine taste every now and then. I have not visited this winery or had their wines and I will be looking for it in the store… A couple of other I can recommend though are Boeger Winery, Villa Toscana great zinfandel and barbera), and on the Auburn side in Placer County (still the Sierra Foothills) Mt Vernon Winery. Hi Victoria-
Unfortunately they don’t have a tasting room in Amador. They’re actually located in St. Helena and just source fruit from Amador (more info). There are a few places in the Sacramento area that carry Scott Harvey wines (I live in the area too). One place that I know of sure is Lakeforest Wines in El Dorado Hills.
I’m also a fan of Boeger Winery. Their zins and Barbera are solid every year. I’ve not been to Mt Vernon yet, though. I’ll have to check out your review on your blog. Thanks for passing the link along.
